Background of the Study
Speech acts—utterances that perform actions such as requesting, apologizing, or complimenting—are fundamental to effective communication. Among Igbo speakers in Enugu, these acts are integral to everyday interaction and are deeply embedded in cultural practices. They serve not only to convey literal meaning but also to express social intentions and emotions, thereby enhancing pragmatic competence. In traditional Igbo settings, speech acts are marked by specific linguistic forms and contextual cues that reflect societal values and relational dynamics (Okoro, 2023). As modern influences and multilingual exposure increase, there is a notable shift in how these speech acts are executed, potentially affecting their clarity and effectiveness. Urbanization and global media introduce alternative communicative styles that may challenge the conventional norms of speech act performance. This evolution can lead to mismatches between intended and interpreted meanings, thereby impacting pragmatic competence. The present study investigates how Igbo speakers in Enugu use speech acts and how these practices influence overall pragmatic competence. By examining recorded interactions and conducting in-depth interviews, the study aims to determine whether traditional forms persist, adapt, or erode under modern pressures, and to identify strategies to reinforce effective pragmatic communication.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the rich tradition of speech acts in Igbo discourse, modern influences are altering traditional communicative practices in Enugu. Evidence suggests that as globalized communication styles penetrate local contexts, the conventional forms of speech acts are becoming less distinct. This erosion may lead to ambiguities in intended meaning, reducing pragmatic competence and hindering effective interaction (Okoro, 2023). Additionally, limited research has specifically addressed how these changes affect Igbo speakers’ ability to manage interpersonal communication effectively. This study addresses the gap by evaluating the impact of evolving speech acts on pragmatic competence, aiming to understand and mitigate potential misinterpretations arising from these shifts (Chukwu, 2024).

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it investigates the role of speech acts in shaping pragmatic competence among Igbo speakers in Enugu. Its findings will benefit educators, linguists, and communication planners by providing strategies to reinforce traditional pragmatic practices while accommodating modern influences. Enhanced pragmatic competence can lead to clearer interpersonal interactions and reduced misunderstandings in diverse communicative settings, thus preserving cultural identity and ensuring effective communication (Okoro, 2023; Chukwu, 2024).
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to investigating the effect of speech acts on pragmatic competence among Igbo speakers in Enugu, focusing solely on linguistic and cultural dimensions.
